WE ARE REALGREDIENTS

Realgredients is a community driven and hand-curated database of food-stuffs that only have REAL ingredients.

We’ve become so focused on reading the nutrition information on the label—how many calories it has, the number of carbs, how much sugar’s in it, how much fat it has, that we’ve forgotten to make sure we were still eating actual FOOD still.

We are not a diet/lifestyle site (although we’ll let you know if a foodstuff is acceptable on one), and we make no judgment on the health benefits of the foodstuff itself. We do, however, believe that we’re better off eating real food, and the less processed our foodstuff is, the better it is for us.

As a culture, we go to the grocery store, buy ready-made food, warm it up, maybe add an ingredient or two, and we consider that “cooking”. IT’S NOT. Cooking is a from-scratch activity that ensures we know what we’re putting into our body. If you opened a cookbook and found a recipe for chicken nuggets that called for modified food starch, xylitol, hydrolyzed soy protein, and artificial flavors, you’d be aghast with shock—not to mention completely lost as to where to procure those items. Common sense tells you that it’s not real food. You wouldn’t make it to eat, but most mass-produced foodstuffs we buy, have similar ingredients. So you end up eating it anyway.

The truth is, we are what we eat. And the United States has become a nation of fat, diabetes-ridden people, with ailments only science fiction writers could’ve dreamed (Restless Leg Syndrome, anyone?). Any personal trainer worth their salt will tell you weight loss is 80-90% nutrition, and 10-20% physical activity. Nutrition comes from eating real food, and Realgredients is about eating real again.

HOW TO USE THIS SITE
Click on the FOOD LOOKUP tool in the menu bar to start your search. You can type in a food item directly into that search bar, or you can click on a category. The category page will tell you what we expect to see in each food item. Mayonnaise, for instance needs only 3 ingredients: Oil, Eggs, & Vinegar. We don’t consider spices as part of the ingredient list.
Armed with the knowledge of how many ingredients a food-stuff *should* have, it’s a lot easier to make better food choices. Two foodstuffs with the same rating, may have a different number of ingredients—the one closest to our minimum is often the one better for you.

We have 3 ratings for food: Healthy, Healthier, and Healthiest. Healthy is our MINIMUM grade, and we don’t keep full pages of food products with ingredients that would receive a less-than HEALTHY grade. We do, however, keep track of those food products, but they are not searchable.

Since our database is hand-curated and maintained, you’ll see our thoughts on every food category as well as food item. Every ingredient is taken into consideration, and when appropriate, we’ll reach out to the manufacturer for clarification.  Some ingredients are suspect, so we’ll also give you our thoughts on it as well.

Our healthiest plus rating is reserved for organic food ONLY. Lower ratings of Healthy and Healthier do not have a “+” designation. Why? Because if you’re eating organic, you’re looking to have the best stuff put into your body. And it doesn’t get better than our HEALTHIEST rating. In short, why eat organic if the foodstuff isn’t the best that it can be?

Real food doesn’t necessarily mean healthy; it simply means it’s real. And we’re better off eating real food, rather than the lab created, overly processed food that litter every aisle in the grocery stores.

Food ingredients are listed in order of weight. So a food-stuff with sugar as the first ingredient, and water as the next, means that by weight, there is more sugar in the food-stuff than water. And so on, and so on.

The FDA allows for some legal obfuscation—100% maple syrup for instance, can actually contain preservatives, salt, and anti-foaming agents. Food manufacturers are still able to claim 100% maple syrup as their only ingredient. We’ll let you know what they say, and if we can verify their claims, we’ll let you know that as well.
