What’s junk? Food with chemical additives and unnatural ingredients. Food with natural/artificial flavors will make this list, as will as ones with citric acid, sweeteners other than the natural ones, food derivatives like hydrolyzed soy protein or carrageenan, and foods with any kind of coloring.

HEALTHY is the minimum rating we give an item. HEALTHIER is the next best, while HEALTHIEST is the best rating we will give. A rating of HEALTHIEST+ means that the item is organic.

Foodstuffs with less than healthy ingredients will not receive a minimum rating from us.

Spices are natural by definition, and they don’t matter when we count ingredients, because spices only change how flavorful your food is—they don’t make up the food itself.

Consider this checkmark the TRANSPARENCY indicator. We already give manufacturer representatives the ability to comment on their food, yes.

But if they’ve allowed us to tour their facility so we can cross-reference what they’ve told us with what is actually happening and we’ve been able to verify their claims, that product will get this coveted marker.

There are limits to what we can verify, however. If we don’t feel satisfied for some reason, that marker will not appear.

Generally speaking, smaller manufacturers are more forthright than the larger ones.

Not all tomatoes are the same.

As a result, the ingredients list doesn’t always tell the entire story, much in the same way a knockoff Louis Vuitton bag uses the same materials as the real ones have. If the manufacturer shares the process for their product with us, you’ll see that here. If we’ve been able to verify their claims, you’ll see the verified ingredient marker appear as well.

In a nutshell, there is often a reason that products with the same ingredients have such a difference in price. But marketing speak aside, there’s no legitimate way for the product rep to honestly tell customers why.

When they tell us, we’ll add their comments to let you know their thoughts.

Many standard ingredients have the potential to be genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Unless the ingredient is specifically referenced as being NON-GMO, we’ll let you know when a product could contain one or more of the common GMO ingredients.

Common genetically modified ingredients include, but are not limited to: all things soy, all things corn, all things sugar beets, tomatoes, beef, milk, rapeseed (canola) oil,  flax, Hawaiian papayas, and many squash varieties (pumpkin, butternut, etc).

Although there are many ingredients that could be genetically modified, When we alert you, it will be because one of these ingredients.
